Journal Square had its heyday in the 1920s to the 1960s. These were the days of The Stanley Theatre and the Loews Jersey Theater that were Art Deco palaces of entertainment for the residents. Both theatres still exist and have been repurposed for additional uses. Recycling and adaptive reuse of buildings in The Square can also be seen in the recent renovation of the Jersey City Medical Center. The Beacon, as it is called now, is a luxury mixed use development consisting of retail and luxury condominium units that has maintained its original Art Deco feel. The Hudson County Court House as well as Jersey City Community College and St Peters University are all located in The Square. Redevelopment is on the upswing in The Square as high rise mixed use apartment buildings are under construction. This is an area of Jersey City that should be on the radar of all investors!
